As part of my commitment to keeping you informed about the exciting changes in our community, here’s the latest update on the Dana Point Harbor Revitalization Project. This ambitious endeavor is reshaping the harbor into a modern coastal destination while preserving the charm and character we all love. With new developments taking shape, here’s everything you need to know about the most recent progress.
The harbor is buzzing with activity as Dock of the Purple Lantern (Dock 21) prepares to open in early November 2024. Located in the west basin island, this new dock replaces part of E-dock and introduces slips in sizes of 35’, 41’, and 45’. While the 45’ slips have already been selected, there are still opportunities for 41’ slips, so don’t miss your chance if you’re looking for a spot in this prime location. Looking ahead, Dock of the Crimson Lantern will replace the F-dock in Phase 8, introducing 35’, 50’, and 56’ slips. Demolition begins in November 2024, and the dock is expected to be operational by March 2025. Slip selection for Crimson Lantern begins mid-November.
The harbor’s focus on sustainability continues with the addition of two new trash skimmers, now fully operational in high-debris areas. These devices, installed at Dock 8 in the west basin cove and Dock 26 in the west basin island, run 24/7, efficiently collecting marine debris while consuming minimal electricity. This eco-friendly initiative ensures improved water quality and a healthier marine environment for all.
The broader revitalization of Dana Point Harbor is moving forward in phases to minimize disruption while maintaining public access. The three-tiered parking structure at Golden Lantern and Dana Point Harbor Drive reached its Topping Out milestone in October 2024, marking the completion of its highest point. The structure is on track for a summer 2025 opening, providing much-needed parking for visitors. Work on underground utilities began in July 2024, ensuring the harbor is ready for upcoming developments. Throughout construction, businesses, including restaurants, retail shops, and recreational services, remain open, with ample parking available at Mariner’s Village.
The next major phase focuses on redeveloping the Commercial Core, with construction starting in 2025. This phase promises exciting new dining, shopping, and recreational opportunities that will make the harbor a premier destination for locals and visitors alike. Also in the works are two new hotels, approved by the California Coastal Commission in June 2024. This marks a significant milestone for the harbor, with the project including a $6 million community benefits package to support Orange County service organizations. The next review for these developments is set for March 2025.
